Mallorca employs a 5-3-2 formation designed to be defensively solid and quick on the break. This lineup focuses on a counter attacking identity where the team stays compact to frustrate opponents. The goal is to sit deep and use vertical passing to move the ball from the defensive third to the attackers as fast as possible.

G. Buffon starts in goal to command the area and stop shots. The back line consists of a central trio of A. Nesta, F. Rijkaard, and F. Baresi (C). F. Baresi (C) uses his reading of the game to lead the line, while A. Nesta uses his tackling and positioning to win the ball. P. Maldini and E. Gerets act as wing backs to provide width, with P. Maldini often overlapping to support the attack. This five man unit makes it very difficult for teams to break through the middle.

The midfield uses a three man unit to control the center. L. Matthäus provides a wide passing range and drives the team forward, while B. Robson works to cover space and link the lines. D. Maradona plays as an attacking ten where his dribbling helps him break the line and find the forwards. This midfield group works to intercept passes and quickly switch play to the wide areas.

Up front, the team uses two forwards to pressure the defense. Ronaldo plays as a left striker and uses his acceleration and dribbling to run behind the back four. M. van Basten plays as a right striker to hold up the ball and use his aerial ability in the box. The movement of these two forwards combined with the width from the wing backs creates many chances to cut inside and score.

This formation offers two main tactical advantages. First, it provides a heavy number of defenders to ensure compactness when defending in a low block. Second, the speed of transition is very high because of the ability of players like L. Matthäus to pass long distances. The team can also create wide overloads when the wing backs push up high.

The 5-3-2 lineup is a very resilient formation for Mallorca to use. It is best suited for games against teams that hold a lot of possession.
