Athletic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zubizarreta · Liceranzu · Goikoetxea · Urkiaga · Núñez © · Gallego · Urtubi · De Andrés · Noriega · Argote · SarabiaAthletic uses a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to be defensively solid and relies on a compact low block to deny space between the lines. The team focuses on staying organized and waiting for the right moment to strike through vertical passes or quick transitions.
Sarabia sits between the posts to organize the back line. The defense works as a unit consisting of three central defenders with De Andrés, Gallego, and Urtubi. These three stay close together to protect the central area, while Urtubi and Gallego provide aerial strength and cover. On the flanks, Noriega and Argote act as wing backs. They must track back to help the defense and can push high to provide width when the team moves forward.
The midfield consists of four players working in a flat line to clog the passing lanes. Liceranzu and Goikoetxea occupy the central roles to shield the defense and fight for second balls. Núñez, who is the captain (C), operates on the right side to provide balance and help transition the ball. Urkiaga plays on the left to maintain the width of the midfield bank. This group works to stay compact, making it hard for opponents to play through the middle.
In the attacking phase, Zubizarreta acts as a lone striker. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfield and wing backs to join the attack. The attack is built through long balls or quick switches to the wide areas where Noriega and Argote can cross. Because there is only one forward, the wingers and wing backs must make runs into the box to support the striker and create scoring chances.
This formation offers several tactical advantages, such as great compactness when defending deep in their own half. By having five defenders and four midfielders, Athletic can crowd the box and block crosses easily. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads once the opponent commits too many players forward. The team can also use the speed of transition to catch the opposition off guard when they lose possession.
This 5-4-1 formation is built to absorb pressure and frustrate teams that dominate possession. It is best suited for games against heavy favorites where Athletic needs to sit deep and defend their goal.
