Williams acts as the last line of defense behind a back five. Mokoena sits in the middle of the defense to command the line, while Cupido and Johannes provide cover on either side. The wing backs, Ndamane and Mudau, push very high up the pitch to provide width, which means the central defenders must be ready to cover the wide areas if the ball is lost. This defensive unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and force the opponent into wide areas.

The midfield works with a double pivot consisting of Santos and Adams. These two players need to control the tempo and shield the back five when the wing backs are caught high. Adams and Santos focus on breaking the lines with vertical passes and making runs to support the attack. They act as the link between the defenders and the forward line, ensuring that the team can transition from a defensive block to an attacking phase quickly.

In the attacking third, Sundowns deploy three attackers. Leon leads the line as the lone striker, holding up the ball to allow Lunga and Morena to make runs. Lunga and Morena operate as wide wingers, looking to cut inside or deliver crosses into the box. The movement of Leon pulls defenders out of position, creating pockets of space for the wingers to exploit as they press the opposition backline.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for Sundowns. The presence of Ndamane and Mudau allows for wide overloads that can overwhelm the opposition full backs. Using five defenders also provides great compactness when defending a lead, making it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.
