Athletic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zubizarreta · Liceranzu · Goikoetxea · Urkiaga · De la Fuente · Sola · Urtubi · De Andrés · Dani © · Argote · NoriegaAthletic uses a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup focuses on a high press and verticality to disrupt the opponent. The team aims to win the ball back quickly in the attacking third and move it forward with direct passes to exploit spaces behind the defensive line.
Zubizarreta starts in goal to command the area. In front of him, the back four consists of Urkiaga at right back and De la Fuente at left back. These wide defenders are expected to push up the pitch to provide width. Liceranzu and Goikoetxea act as the central defenders, where Goikoetxea provides aerial strength and Liceranzu covers the space behind. The defensive unit works to stay compact and step up to catch attackers offside.
The midfield operates as a three man unit to control the center of the pitch. Urtubi and Sola work to cover large areas, with Urtubi helping to break the line with his runs. De Andrés sits in the middle to shield the defense and connect the back line to the front three. This trio must press together to prevent the opposition from playing through the center, forcing the ball wide.
Athletic utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Noriega leads the line as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and battle with center backs. On the flanks, Argote and Dani © provide width and goal threats. Dani ©, the captain, can cut inside to create chances or use his pace to beat his marker. The wingers are expected to press the opposition full backs high up the pitch to force turnovers.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The high press from Argote, Dani ©, and Noriega allows the team to win the ball in dangerous areas. There is a clear ability to create wide overloads when Urkiaga or De la Fuente overlap their wingers. Furthermore, the midfield trio provides compactness when defending deep, making it hard for opponents to find passing lanes through the middle.
The 4-3-3 formation defines a high intensity identity for Athletic. This lineup works best against teams that try to play out from the back and leave space behind their midfielders.
