Athletic play a 4-3-3 that focuses on a high press and direct verticality. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move it quickly toward the goal. The team looks to control the tempo through aggressive pressing and rapid transitions to catch the opponent out of position.

Zubizarreta acts as the last line of defense in goal. Ahead of him, the back four maintains a high line to compress the pitch. Liceranzu and Goikoetxea work as the central pairing, where they use their physical presence to intercept passes and win aerial duels. Urkiaga and Núñez provide width as full backs, often pushing up to overlap the attackers and provide crosses into the box. The defensive unit works together to step up and squeeze the space between the lines.

The midfield consists of a three man unit designed to control the center of the pitch. Urtubi and De Andrés work to shield the defense and break the lines with their passing. P. Salinas operates in the central area to drive forward and connect the defensive unit to the front three. This group focuses on winning second balls and ensuring the team maintains control during the transition from defense to attack.

Athletic uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Endika leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and create space for others. On the flanks, Argote and Dani © operate as wide attackers. Dani ©, the captain, looks to cut inside and create goal scoring chances from the right wing while Argote provides width on the left. The front three press in coordinated waves to force turnovers in the final third.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads by having Urkiaga and Núñez push forward. Another advantage is the capacity to press high, which disrupts the build up play of the opponent. The compactness of the midfield and defense makes it hard for teams to find space between the lines, allowing the team to recover the ball quickly.

This 4-3-3 is a high energy formation built for aggressive pressing and quick transitions. It is best suited for games where the team can exploit an opponent that struggles to play out from the back under pressure.
