Man City uses a 4-2-4 formation to drive a high press and vertical attacking style. This lineup is built to attack with heavy numbers and hunt for the ball immediately after losing possession. The goal is to pin the opponent back and use the presence of multiple forwards to create constant chaos in their defensive line.

Trafford sits in goal to command the area. The defensive unit works as a flat back four with Khusanov and Guehi positioned in the center. Khusanov and Guehi must be strong in the air and ready to cover any runners from midfield. On the flanks, Nunes and O'Reilly play as full backs. Nunes will look to overlap to provide width, while O'Reilly must track back quickly to prevent being exposed during transitions. The defenders must shift together to maintain a tight block when the opponent tries to switch play.

In the middle of the pitch, the midfield operates as a double pivot with Rodri and Bernardo Silva. Rodri holds his position to shield the back four and uses his passing range to break the line. Bernardo Silva uses his dribbling to help link the play and move the ball forward. Because there are only two central players, they must work hard to intercept passes and prevent the opponent from finding space in the center.

The attack is aggressive with four players positioned high up the pitch. Doku and Semenyo act as wide attackers, with Doku using his dribbling and pace to drive at the defense. Semenyo provides width and can cut inside to shoot or cross. In the center, Marmoush and Haaland operate as two central forwards. Haaland uses his physicality to hold up the ball, while Marmoush makes runs to stretch the defense. This lineup forces the opposition to stay deep.

A major strength of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. With four attackers, Man City can swarm the opponent and force turnovers near their goal. The formation also creates many one on one situations for the wide players. By having Haaland and Marmoush in the box, the team creates a central overload that makes it very difficult for opposing center backs to mark everyone.

This 4-2-4 lineup is a direct and aggressive way to play. It works best when facing a team that sits deep and needs to be broken down by constant pressure.
