Man City uses a 4-3-3 formation to drive a high press and control the ball. This lineup is built to play aggressive, possession based football that pins the opposition into their own half. The goal is to use constant passing and movement to break the lines of the defense.

Donnarumma guards the goal and manages the defensive unit from the back. The defense operates as a flat back four where Guehi and Khusanov form the central pairing. Guehi is known for his reading of the game and his ability to intercept passes, while Khusanov provides physical presence. OReilly acts as an attacking left back to overlap the wingers, and Nunes holds the right side to cover the space. The whole back line is expected to step up and maintain a high line to squeeze the pitch.

The midfield works with a single pivot to control the center of the pitch. Rodrigo sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and intercept play. Kovacic and Cherki play in the two advanced central roles. Kovacic uses his passing range to connect the defense to the attack, while Cherki looks to drive forward and create chances. This midfield trio allows Man City to keep the ball and move it quickly through the phases.

In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opponent. Doku operates on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to take defenders on. Semenyo stays on the right wing to provide width and cross the ball into the box. Haaland plays as the lone striker, using his physical strength and movement to find space. The front three press in coordination to force turnovers high up the pitch.

One major strength is the ability to create wide overloads when OReilly pushes up to support Doku. The formation also produces numerical superiority in the center of the pitch because of the way Rodrigo, Kovacic, and Cherki work together. This allows the team to dominate possession and quickly switch play to isolate attackers in one on one situations.

This 4-3-3 lineup focuses on intense pressing and ball control. It is most effective when facing opponents who play in a low block and rely on counter attacks.
