River Football Formation

Starting Lineup

River plays a 5-4-1 formation. This is a defensively solid lineup designed to sit deep and protect the central area. The team looks to soak up pressure and hit teams on the break. This formation is built to play a counter attacking style where the focus remains on compactness and making it hard for opponents to find space between the lines.

Beltrán stays between the posts to protect the goal. The back line consists of a back three made up of Ramírez, Rivero, and Moreno. These three central defenders act as a wall to block crosses and intercept through balls. Montiel and Acuña operate as wing backs on each side. Montiel can push up to overlap and provide width, while Acuña must track back to help the back line when the team loses the ball. The whole unit shifts together to maintain a low block.

The midfield uses a double pivot to shield the defense. Galván and JC Meza sit in front of the back three to tackle and intercept passes. They protect the zone in front of Moreno, Rivero, and Ramírez. Further up, Lencina and Subiabre occupy the wide attacking midfield roles. They connect the defense to the attack by receiving the ball and looking to switch play. They must also drop back to form a bank of four when defending to close down gaps.

Colidio acts as a lone striker in this formation. He is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support from the midfield. He must press the opposition defenders to disrupt their build up. When the team wins the ball, Montiel and Acuña push high to provide width, allowing Lencina and Subiabre to cut inside and create chances. The goal is to move the ball forward rapidly to Colidio so he can run into space and break the line.

One major strength of this River lineup is the compactness when defending in a low block. It is very difficult for teams to break the line with central passes. Another advantage is the ability to use the wing backs for wide overloads. When Montiel and Acuña move forward, they create extra passing lanes to overwhelm the opposition flanks. The team can also use the speed of transition to catch opponents off guard.
