Sarti stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit sits in a back three with Picchi, Facchetti, and Burgnich forming a solid line. Picchi leads the group to intercept passes and mark the central striker. Facchetti and Burgnich provide cover on either side, ready to step up or drop back depending on the movement of the ball. This back three functions as a single block to deny space in the middle of the park.

In the middle of the pitch, Inter uses a crowded midfield to control the tempo. Guarnieri and Bedin act as a double pivot to shield the defense and break up opposition play. Jair Da Costa and Suarez push higher to link the defensive line with the attackers, helping to drive the ball forward through the middle.
