A heavy emphasis on defensive solidity and compact blocks defines Santos in this 5-4-1 formation. This lineup works to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting teams on the break. Every player must remain disciplined to ensure the team stays difficult to break down during long periods of opposition possession.
Gabriel Barbosa guards the goal as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, a back three of Rollheiser, Arao, and Oliva provides a dense central wall. Rollheiser, Arao, and Oliva must communicate to cover gaps and mark runners in the box. Miguelito and Bontempo operate as wing backs, tasked with tracking back to form a five man line when defending, but they are also expected to push high to provide width during transitions.
The midfield operates as a flat four to congest the central zones. Frias and Verissimo sit in the middle to shield the defenders and intercept passes. Frias and Verissimo must press when the ball enters their zone and work to break the line with vertical passes. On the flanks, Barreal and Vinicius stay wide to provide outlets, making sure they track back to help the wing backs when the opposition attacks the wide areas.
Brazao leads the line as a lone striker. Because the team plays a low block, Brazao must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to move up the pitch. He works to press the opposition defenders to prevent easy build up play. The attacking movements rely on Barzao making runs into the channels to create space for Barreal and Vinicius to cut inside and join the attack.
Santos can benefit from extreme compactness when defending in deep blocks. The proximity of the midfield to the back three makes it hard for opponents to find pockets of space between the lines. Additionally, the speed of transition allows the team to catch opponents out of position. When Miguelito and Bontempo overlap, they create wide overloads that can pull the opposition defense apart.
This 5-4-1 formation is built to frustrate opponents who dominate possession. It is best suited for games where the team needs to defend a lead or play against a significantly more attacking opponent.
