A possession based style defines the Sundowns lineup in a 4-3-3. This formation focuses on controlling the ball and using it to move the opponent out of position through constant passing. The team aims to dominate through heavy control of the central areas while remaining ready to exploit gaps in the opposition.

Williams guards the goal as the last line of defense. A flat back four forms the foundation of this unit, with Cupido and Ndamane acting as the central pair. Cupido and Ndamane must hold the line and communicate to ensure they do not get pulled out of position. On the flanks, Mudau and Lunga provide width, often pushing high to support the midfield or overlapping to provide extra passing options. The defensive unit works to keep the distance between the lines small to prevent the opponent from playing through the middle.

Control of the center of the pitch is managed by a trio of midfielders. Mokoena and Adams operate in the deeper roles to shield the defense and recycle possession. Mokoena and Adams work to intercept passes and break the lines with vertical passes. Santos operates in the attacking midfield role to connect the play to the front three. Santos finds pockets of space between the lines to create chances, while Mokoena and Adams ensure the team remains compact when the ball is lost.

The attacking front line consists of three players designed to stretch the opposition. Leon operates as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. On the wings, Lethlaku and Mathews provide width and directness. Lethlaku and Mathews often cut inside to shoot or look for crosses into the box. This attacking group must press high to win the ball back quickly in the final third.

Sundowns gain a significant advantage through their ability to create numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By having Mokoena, Adams, and Santos close to one another, they can often outnumber the opposition's central players. Another strength is the wide overload created when Mudau or Lunga overlap Lethlaku or Mathews. This forces the opposing full backs to make difficult decisions between marking the winger or covering the running defender.

This 4-3-3 formation relies on technical dominance and ball retention to dictate the tempo of the match. It is a lineup best suited for games where the team faces a low block and needs to break down a stubborn defense through patient passing and wide movements.
