Sardo) · Zambo-Anguissa (Samuele Ricci) · Maignan (Torriani) · Mario Gila (Tomori) · Pavlovic (J. Gomez) · Gabbia (De Winter) · A. Laurienté (Alphadjo Cissé) · Moise Kean (F. Camarda / Kostic)A heavy emphasis on verticality and rapid transitions defines Milan and their 3-5-2 formation. This lineup focuses on controlling the central areas before quickly pushing the ball forward to exploit gaps behind the opposition defense. By keeping a compact core, the team looks to win the ball back and immediately target the attackers in space.
In goal, Maignan acts as the primary organizer of the defensive unit. The back line operates as a three man block consisting of Gabbia, Mario Gila, and Pavlovic. Gabbia provides leadership in the center, while Mario Gila and Pavlovic cover the wider areas of the three man line. These defenders often step up to intercept long balls and maintain a high line to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch.
The midfield acts as the engine room through a complex five man grouping. Saelemakers and Alex Grimaldo sit deeper to shield the back three and break up play. Ahead of them, L. Modric uses his exceptional passing range and vision to connect the defense to the rest of the team. Adrien Rabiot and Zambo-Anguissa operate in the half spaces, driving forward to link the play and provide support to the front line.
Milan utilizes two forwards to lead the press and stretch the opposition. Moise Kean and A. Laurienté lead the charge from the front, often working to drag defenders out of position. The two attackers push high to press the opponent's build up, while their movement creates space for the attacking midfielders to run into. This two man front line forces the opposition to stay deep or risk being caught out by quick through balls.
A major strength of this Milan lineup is the numerical superiority found in the central areas of the pitch. With L. Modric and the wider midfielders, the team can quickly overload the center to dominate possession. The coordination between the wing back roles and the central midfielders also allows the team to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
This 3-5-2 formation creates a highly compact middle block that is difficult to break through. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a high line or those that struggle to track runners from deep midfield.
