Starting Lineup

Zubizarreta · Liceranzu · Goikoetxea · Urkiaga · De la Fuente · Gallego · Urtubi · De Andrés · J. Salinas · Dani © · P. Salinas

A defensive identity defines Athletic as they deploy a compact 5-4-1. This formation focuses on sitting deep and absorbing pressure before launching quick breaks. The lineup relies on a low block to deny space between the lines and forces the opposition into wide areas where they can be contained.

J. Salinas guards the goal as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, the back five works in unison to protect the central zone. De Andrés sits in the middle of the trio to anchor the defense and provide cover, while Gallego and Dani (C) occupy the left and right channels of the central line. As captain, Dani holds the defensive line and communicates instructions to keep the unit tight. On the flanks, Urtubi and P. Salinas act as wing backs, tasked with tracking back to defend the wide areas and pushing up the pitch to provide width when the team moves forward.

The midfield operates in a flat line of four to block passing lanes. Liceranzu and Goikoetxea occupy the central spaces to shield the defense and contest second balls. They act as the engine, trying to intercept play and break the lines with vertical passes. On the edges, Urkiaga and De la Fuente operate as wide midfielders, tracking back to assist the wing backs and pressing when the ball enters their zone. This midfield unit connects the back five to the lone forward through quick transitions.

In the final third, Zubizarreta operates as a lone striker. His primary role is to hold up the ball and wait for support from the midfield or wing backs. He must work hard to press the opposing center backs and create space for others to run into. The attack is built through long balls or quick switches to Urkiaga or De la Fuente, who look to deliver crosses or cut inside to create chances.

Athletic gains an advantage through their extreme compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The formation also allows for quick transitions, as the wing backs Urtubi and P. Salinas can quickly push forward to create numerical superiority on the flanks. This setup creates a hard block that is difficult to break down in low block situations.

This 5-4-1 formation prioritizes defensive solidity and controlled counter attacks. It is best suited for games against dominant possession sides where Athletic can sit deep and exploit space behind the opposition defense.
