A focus on direct play and verticality defines the tactical identity of PSV in this 4-4-2. This lineup is built to transition quickly from defense to attack by using powerful forwards to stretch the opposition. Wattereus stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a flat four with Numan acting as the captain to lead the group. Numan and Prommayon provide width from the full back positions to support the midfield. In the center, Faber and Valckx work to block passing lanes and win aerial duels. The defensive unit stays compact to prevent opponents from playing through the middle.

The midfield operates in two banks of four to maintain control over the central zones. Linskens and Jonk occupy the central roles, where they look to intercept passes and drive the ball forward into the attacking third. Linskens acts to shield the defense while Jonk helps to connect the back line to the front. On the flanks, Vink and Cocu provide the necessary width. They must track back to help the full backs and push up to support the attackers during transitions.

PSV employs two forwards to lead the line and create constant pressure. Ronaldo plays as a second striker, using his legendary dribbling style and explosive pace to break the line. Nilis acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and bring others into play. These two attackers press high to force mistakes from the opposition defenders. The movement of Ronaldo and Nilis creates space for Vink and Cocu to make runs from deep.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to isolate Ronaldo in one on one situations against defenders. The team can also create wide overloads when Prommayon and Vink overlap to send crosses into the box. Another strength is the compactness of the two banks of four, which makes it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.
