Panathinaikos Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Kyriakopoulos · Touba · Calabria · Ingasson · Chirivella · Swiderski · Pellistri · Cerin · R. Sanches · Andino · WiegelePrioritizing a heavy press and rapid verticality, Panathinaikos employs a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and hit opponents before they can settle. The goal is to use width and direct passing to break lines quickly.
Wiegele sits between the posts to command the area and distribute the ball. In front of him, Chirivella leads the central defense alongside Touba and Ingasson. The three central defenders act as a wall, with Chirivella often stepping up to intercept passes while Touba and Ingasson provide cover and aerial strength. Calabria and Kyriakopoulos operate as wing backs, pushing high to provide width and overlapping to support the attackers. This defensive unit can sit deep in a low block or step up to compress the space between the lines.
The midfield functions as a double pivot to maintain control of the center. R. Sanches and Cerin work together to shield the back three and break up play. R. Sanches uses his energy to press opponents and win back possession, while Cerin connects the defense to the attack with his passing range. This pair must track back constantly to cover the space left by the advancing wing backs. Their job is to hold the middle and ensure the team is not caught on a break.
Panathinaikos uses three attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Swiderski acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and target crosses from the wide areas. On the flanks, Andino and Pellistri play as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create chances. Pellistri uses his pace to drive at defenders, while Andino provides width and runs behind the full backs. This front three leads the high press, forcing the opposition into mistakes.
One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Calabria and Kyriakopoulos overlap with the wingers. This creates 2v1 situations on the flanks that are difficult to mark. Additionally, the five man defense provides compactness when defending deep, making it very hard for opponents to find gaps. The speed of transition from the double pivot to the front three allows for immediate pressure on the ball.
This 5-2-3 lineup focuses on heavy pressing and rapid counter attacking. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line or struggle to play through a compact defensive block.
