Starting Lineup

Neymar · Mbappé · Messi · T. Silva · Hakimi · Verratti · Vitinha · Marquinhos · Dembélé · Mendes · Donnarumma

PSG relies on high pressing and rapid transitions using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to control the center of the pitch and overwhelm opponents with verticality. By committing so many players forward, the team looks to dominate much of the game through high possession and constant pressure in the final third.

Donnarumma stays between the posts to sweep up long balls and organize the defensive line. The back line is very narrow with just two central defenders, Marquinhos and Thiago Silva, who must stay alert to cover massive spaces. Marquinhos uses his pace to cover for others, while Thiago Silva uses his reading of the game to intercept passes. Since there are no traditional full backs, these two must be extremely disciplined to prevent counter attacks.

The midfield is the engine of this PSG lineup, operating as a five man unit that covers the width of the pitch. Mendes and Hakimi act as wide pivots to provide cover and help switch play, while Verratti and Vitinha operate in the central channels to control the tempo and break the line with vertical passes. Verratti uses his tight ball control and passing range to connect the defense to the attack. Messi sits in the hole as an attacking ten, looking to find pockets of space and deliver killer passes to the front line.

The attacking trio is designed to be incredibly difficult to mark. Mbappé leads the line as a lone striker, using his blistering pace and direct running to stretch the defense. Neymar operates on the left, often cutting inside to create chances or shoot, while Dembélé stays wide on the right to provide width and stretch the opposition back line. This front three can press in waves, forcing mistakes from the opponent's defenders near their own goal.

A primary strength of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. With five players in the central zones, the team can easily outnumber most standard midfields and dominate the ball. The team also benefits from extreme speed of transition, as Messi, Neymar, and Mbappé can move from a defensive block to a goal scoring chance in seconds.

This formation is built for teams that want to suffocate the opponent through high pressing and ball dominance. It is most effective against opponents that play a low block and struggle to cope with intense pressure in the central zones.
