SL Benfica aims to dominate through verticality and aggressive ball winning using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to push the opposition back and control the pitch through heavy numbers in the middle and high up the field. By using a very aggressive position, the team looks to win the ball back high up the pitch to create immediate chances.

Paiva Simões acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit consists of a narrow two man back line with Francisco and Henrique. These central defenders must stay alert to cover the space behind them as the rest of the team pushes forward. Francisco and Henrique need to be dominant in the air and quick to intercept any long balls played over the top, as the formation leaves significant space behind the two defenders.

The midfield is extremely crowded to control the center of the park. In the central area, Cosme, Carlos, and Artur José form a three man midfield to control the tempo and recycle possession. Carlos and Artur José can drive forward with the ball, while Cosme works to shield the two defenders and pick up runners from deep. Ahead of them, Alberto and Herculano operate in the half spaces as two attacking tens. Alberto and Herculano press aggressively to win the ball high and connect the central midfield to the front three.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to pin the opposition back. Luis leads the line as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposing centre backs. On the flanks, Álvaro and Domingos act as wide wingers who spread wide to stretch the defence. Álvaro and Domingos look to cut inside to create goal scoring opportunities, while Luis looks to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind the defense. The front line works in combinations to pull defenders out of position.

One major advantage for SL Benfica is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield through the combination of the three central players and the two attacking tens. This setup also allows for a high press in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The presence of three attackers keeps the opposition defense deep, which helps the midfield control the game.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward lineup designed for total dominance. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block or overwhelm an opponent through sheer numbers in the attacking third.
