SL Benfica Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Machado · Manuel (Lopes) · António (Costa) · Henrique (Costa) · Cosme (Damião) · Luis (Vieira) · Leopoldo (Mocho) · Constantino (Encarnação) · António (Meireles) · Josué (Correia) · Artur José (Pereira)SL Benfica aims to dominate through high numbers in the middle of the pitch using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use heavy central numbers to overwhelm the opposition. By pushing so many players forward, the team looks to control the tempo through heavy central presence and quick ball movement.
Machado stays between the posts to act as the last line of defense. The defensive unit relies on a back two consisting of Leopoldo and Henrique. These two central defenders must play with a high line to keep the team compact. Leopoldo and Henrique act as ball playing defenders who must be ready to cover huge amounts of space behind them if the press is broken. They must stay alert to clear the lines and stop any runners who bypass the midfield.
The midfield is a massive block of five that controls the center of the pitch. Cosme and António work as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Artur José operates on the left of this group to connect the defense to the attack. Further forward, António and Manuel act as attacking midfielders in the half spaces to create passing lanes. This five man midfield allows SL Benfica to win the second ball and quickly progress through the thirds.
The attack uses three players across the front to stretch the defense. Luis plays as a lone striker and must hold up the ball to bring others into play. On the wings, Constantino and Josué act as wide players who can cut inside to create overloads. This trio works to pin the last defender and create runs in behind. The team builds the attack by playing through the lines to find the feet of the striker or using the wingers to pull wide and cross.
A major advantage of this formation is the massive numerical superiority in midfield. By packing the center with five players, the team can easily outnumber opponents and squeeze the space. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves from the front three and the attacking midfielders. This makes it very difficult for the opposition to play out from the back.
This 2-5-3 lineup is designed for total control and high intensity. It is best suited for games where SL Benfica needs to break down a deep defensive block through central dominance.
