Maignan guards the goal and acts as the last line of defense. The back five features Digne as the left wing back and Kounde as the right wing back to provide width. Tchouaméni sits in the center of the back five to command the area and play out from the back. Upamecano and Konate work as the central defenders to win headers and cover the space behind the wing backs. Digne and Kounde must track back quickly when possession is lost to maintain a narrow defensive block.

A four man midfield bank sits ahead of the defense to squeeze the space. Dembele plays on the right side while Doue operates on the left. In the center, Olise and Cherki act as the primary carriers to move the ball from deep. Cherki looks to play through the lines with his passing range, while Olise tries to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. This midfield unit works to intercept passes and protect the back five during the mid block.

The attack relies on a lone striker in Kylian Mbappe who stays high to pin the last defender. France builds the attack through quick transitions rather than long periods of possession. When the team wins the ball, they look to find Mbappe immediately to exploit his pace. Digne and Kounde push up to overlap the wingers to provide crosses. Mbappe makes runs in behind the defensive line to receive long balls or through balls from Olise and Cherki.

This lineup offers great defensive compactness when sitting in a low block. By having five defenders and four midfielders, France makes it very difficult to play through the middle. The speed of transition is a major advantage because Mbappe can exploit the space left by an attacking opponent. Additionally, the ability of Digne and Kounde to spread wide allows the team to stretch the defence during counter attacks.
