Inter focuses on a high press and quick transitions using a 3-5-2 formation. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately look to break quickly. This lineup is built to play vertical football that punishes teams that lose control of the middle of the pitch.

Y.Sommer stays between the posts to guide the back three. A.Bastoni acts as the left centre-back and uses his passing range to play out from the back. M.Gila plays as the right centre-back to win the header and hold the line, while J.Stones operates in the middle to cover for his teammates. The defensive unit defends zonally to stay compact. They will step up to set the offside trap or drop into a low block when under heavy pressure.

The midfield functions with Calhanoglu acting as a single pivot to shield the defence. Calhanoglu uses his set piece delivery and passing range to switch play and find teammates. Barella acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win the ball back. Zielienski plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers to play through the lines. Di Marco and Ratiu provide width as attacking wing backs. Di Marco will often overlap the winger to whip it in or cut it back from the byline.

The attacking unit uses a partnership of two forwards. L.Martinez works to find the feet of the striker and hold up the ball to link up play between the lines. M.Thuram uses his pace to run in behind and knock it in behind on the transition. They press from the front to force a long ball and win the second ball. The movement of the wing backs helps to stretch the defence, allowing Zielienski to arrive late into the box.

A major strength for the Nerazzurri is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs push up. This allows the team to cross on the run and pull wide to create chances. Another advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield which helps to compress the midfield and intercept passes. This formation is very dangerous when the team can hit in behind on the transition.

This 3-5-2 formation is ideal for a team that wants to dominate the central areas and strike with speed. It works best against opponents that play with a high line and struggle to track back.
