Indonesia National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
hosim · dani · zaki · hasbi · hermawan · ahmad · ambon · angger · fahmi · widianto · ferryIndonesia aims to play with a heavy emphasis on defensive solidity and quick transitions. This 4-5-1 formation builds a compact unit that focuses on sitting deep to deny space in the central areas. The team wants to absorb pressure before looking to strike quickly when the opposition leaves gaps behind their defensive line.
Hosim stands between the posts to command the area and organize the defensive unit. The back four functions as a flat line that moves together to maintain compactness. Zaki and dani occupy the center of the defense, with Zaki acting as the right sided center back and dani covering the left. Both must be ready to win the header or step up to intercept passes. On the flanks, hasbi and hermawan act as full backs, needing to track back to help the center backs and monitor wide runners.
The midfield is a five man block designed to squeeze the space in front of the defense. Angger sits in the single pivot role to shield the back four and win the second ball. Ahead of him, fahmi, ambon, and ahmad occupy the central and wide areas to control the middle third. These players are tasked to press in a mid block and ensure they do not let the opposition play through the lines. Widianto operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to connect the lines and find pockets of space to receive on the half turn.
Ferry leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. The attacking plan relies on ferry to work in combination with Widianto to create chances. While the wingers in this formation often drop back to help the midfield, they are also ready to spring forward to support the striker. The team looks to exploit transitions by playing direct or finding the feet of the striker to allow others to run in behind.
One major advantage for Indonesia is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a mid block. The five man midfield makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. Another strength is the potential for quick transitions where Widianto can quickly feed Ferry to catch the defense out of position.
This formation provides a very disciplined defensive base for Indonesia. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where the team needs to stay compact and strike on the break.
