Starting Lineup

Bastoni · Akanji · Pavard · Dimarco · Zielinski · Barella · Dumfries · Calhanoglu · M. Thuram · Lautaro · Sommer

Inter looks to control games through a high press and rapid transitions using a 3-5-2. This formation allows the team to dominate the middle of the pitch while maintaining enough bodies to catch opponents on the break. The lineup is built to press from the front and use wide areas to stretch the opposition.

Sommer stays between the posts to command his area and start attacks. The back three consists of Pavard as the right centre back, Akanji in the middle, and Bastoni on the left. Pavard provides stability and ability to cover wide, while Akanji acts as a ball playing defender to start play. Bastoni is a dominant presence who can step into midfield to help build play. This defensive unit can sit deep in a low block or push up to set the offside trap.

The midfield works in a central engine room to control the tempo. Calhanoglu operates as the deep lying playmaker, sitting in front of the defense to recycle possession and find vertical passes. Barella works as a carrier who drives forward with the ball, while Zielinski connects the lines by finding pockets of space between the opponent midfield and defense. On the flanks, Dimarco and Dumfries act as attacking wing backs. Dimarco provides width and can whip it in from the left, while Dumfries uses his power to overlap and reach the byline.

In the final third, the team uses two forwards in a partnership. Lautaro is a pressing centre forward who works hard to win the ball high up the pitch. M. Thuram plays as a mobile striker who can use his strength to hold up the ball and link up with his partner. They work in combinations to create runs in behind or find space for late runs from the midfield. This attacking duo forces the opposition back line to stay deep, creating room for the midfielders to arrive late into the box.

Inter offers significant tactical advantages through its midfield density and wide overloads. The presence of Barella and Zielinski alongside Calhanoglu makes it hard for opponents to find space in the middle. Using Dimarco and Dumfries allows the team to create two on one situations against opposition full backs. This ability to shift between a compact mid block and a high press makes the Inter lineup very difficult to break down.

This 3-5-2 formation relies on intense physical output and high level passing. It is most effective against teams that try to play through the middle or those that leave space behind their defensive line.
