Man City focuses on defensive solidity and rapid movement in transition. The team operates within a 5-3-2 formation. This formation is designed to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting the opposition with quick vertical passes.

RAUL stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit works as a back five to maintain a narrow defensive block. SEBAS acts as the central anchor, staying deep to clear the lines and win the second ball. EMILIANO and ANDRÉS operate as the two wider centre-backs, ready to cover the channels or step up to intercept passes. VLADI and MAU act as attacking wing backs, tasked to spread wide and overlap the midfield when the team has the ball. They must also track back quickly to ensure the back five remains intact.

In the center of the pitch, the team utilizes a three-man midfield to control the tempo. IKER plays as the single pivot, sitting in front of the defense to shield the back line and recycle possession. JESHUA and PABLO operate as the two more advanced midfielders. JESHUA works to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces, while PABLO focuses on playing through the lines to find the forwards. This trio works together to press in a mid-block and squeeze the space between the lines.

The attacking force consists of two forwards working in a close partnership. ROBERT and DAVID lead the press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. ROBERT often makes runs in behind to stretch the defence, while DAVID works to hold up the ball and link up play with the advancing midfielders. This combination allows Man City to attack in transition with speed. When the wing backs push high, the forwards must pin the last defender to create space for crosses or cutbacks.

A primary advantage of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. When VLADI and MAU push forward, they create two on one situations against the opposition full backs. Another strength is the compactness when defending in a low block. Having five defenders and three midfielders allows the team to occupy the central zones effectively and deny the turn to opposition attackers. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the middle.

This 5-3-2 formation provides a reliable way to defend against high possession teams. It is most effective when the game requires a team to absorb pressure and counter at pace.
