In the middle of the pitch, the team relies on a two man midfield. Zwane works to carry the ball from deep and connect the defensive unit to the attackers. Mofokeng focuses on pressing the opposition in a mid block to win the ball back high up the pitch. Both players strive to shield the defence and protect the back five. Together, they aim to win the second ball and quickly pass through the lines to the front three.

The attacking front features three players working in unison. Foster leads the line as a lone striker to hold up the ball and link with the midfield. Appollis and Rayners play as wingers who look to cut inside and occupy the half spaces. While Appollis works to receive on the half turn and play through the lines, Rayners looks to beat his man and whip it in toward the near post. This movement is designed to create runs in behind and force the opposition defenders to pull wide.

This formation provides South Africa with a significant advantage through its compactness when defending. The presence of five players in the back line makes it very hard for the opposition to find gaps. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Mudau and Ndamane push up to overlap the wingers. This helps to spread the play and create space in the middle for Zwane or Mofokeng to arrive late into the box.
