Charleroi Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Kepa (Defourny) · Kambwala (Sow) · Ostigard (Oussou / Boukamir) · Gaudin (Nzita) · Camara (Boukamir) · Titraoui (Koch / Beckers) · Dybala (Romsaas / Mcintyre) · Karetsas (Descotte / Pflucke) · Maga (Rogelj) · Jovic (Mertens) · Declercq (Nketia)Charleroi seeks to play a hard to beat style of football using a 5-3-2 formation. The team focuses on defensive solidity and winning the ball to strike quickly on the break. This formation is built to stay compact and force the opposition into low percentage plays.
Kepa guards the goal and uses his shot stopping to keep the line secure. The defense functions as a back five with Camara sitting centrally to anchor the unit. Kambwala and Ostigard act as the left and right central defenders to cover the middle and win the header. Maga and Gaudin play as attacking wing backs to provide much needed width. They can push high to overlap the winger or drop back to form a narrow defensive block when the team sits deep.
The midfield consists of a three-man unit to link the defense to the attack. Titraoui plays as a single pivot to shield the defense and drop between the centre-backs to receive the ball. Karetsas and Dybala act as the two central midfielders who press in a mid-block to win it back high up the pitch. Dybala can carry the ball forward to break the line while Karetsas works to pick up runners and recycle possession.
In the final third, Charleroi uses two forwards in a partnership. Jovic and Declercq work to pin the last defender and make runs in behind. Jovic uses his movement to arrive late into the box and attack the far post. Declercq can hold up the ball to allow the midfield to step up. The attack relies on the width provided by Maga and Gaudin to whip it in or deliver early crosses into the area.
The lineup offers massive compactness when defending. The presence of Camara, Kambwala, and Ostigard makes it difficult for teams to play through the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition. When the team wins the ball, the wing backs can quickly spread wide to stretch the defence and find the forwards in space.
This 5-3-2 formation is built for defensive stability and quick counter attacks. It is best suited for games against teams that like to hold possession and attack in heavy numbers.
