Belgium National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Lukaku · De Bruyne · Trossard · De Ketelaere · Tielemans · Onana · Castagne · De Cuyper · Theate · Meunier · CourtoisBelgium seeks to dominate games through high intensity and verticality, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately push players forward to stretch the opposition. The Red Devils want to control the central areas while using their front three to pin the last defender of the opponent.
Thibaut Courtois operates between the posts, acting as a sweeper behind a high line. The defensive unit consists of a two man back line where Theate and Meunier must defend large amounts of space. Theate acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks, while Meunier uses his aerial strength to defend crosses and clear the lines. Because there are only two central defenders, they must step up to squeeze the space and manage the space behind them constantly.
The midfield is a massive five man block designed to control the center of the pitch. Castagne and De Cuyper sit in a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Onana and Tielemans operate as inverted eights, with Onana driving forward with the ball and Tielemans looking to play through the lines with his passing range. De Bruyne plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or whip it in to the box. This midfield unit works to press in a mid-block and win the second ball to keep the pressure on.
Belgium attacks with three players across the front to maximize central presence. Lukaku acts as a target man to hold up the ball and provide an outlet for long balls. Trossard plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create, while De Ketelaere operates on the right to provide width or drift into half spaces. The goal is to create runs in behind and use combinations to break the line. The front three must press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
A major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows Belgium to dominate the ball. The high volume of players in the middle makes it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. Additionally, the team can transition quickly by moving the ball from the double pivot straight to De Bruyne or the wide attackers. This setup allows for wide overloads when the midfielders push high.
This 2-5-3 lineup is built for high pressing and aggressive attacking play. It is best suited for games where Belgium needs to break down a low block or dominate a team that struggles to play out from the back.
