Starting Lineup

Williams · Mudau · Ndamane · Okon · Mbokazi · Modiba · Sithole · Mokoena · Moremi · Appolis · Foster

South Africa wants to play a vertical and hard to break down style of football with a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on being defensively solid and hitting teams on the break. The goal is to absorb pressure and then move the ball quickly to the attackers to exploit space.

Williams stays in goal to command his area and organize the line. The defensive unit uses a back five consisting of Ndamane, Mbokazi, and Okon in the center. Okon sits in the middle to sweep behind the line and win headers, while Ndamane and Mbokazi act as the wide centre backs to cover the flanks. Modiba and Mudau operate as attacking wing backs to provide the width. Modiba pushes up the left side to overlap the winger, and Mudau does the same on the right to stretch the defence. When the opposition has the ball, these wing backs drop deep to form a compact defensive block.

The midfield consists of a pair of midfielders, Sithole and Mokoena. They work to connect the defence and the attack by recycling possession or driving forward with the ball. Sithole and Mokoena must press in a mid block to win the ball back high up the pitch or deny the pivot from playing through the lines. One midfielder often drops to help the back three, while the other looks to arrive late into the box to support the attack. They play to squeeze the space and ensure the opposition cannot find gaps in the middle.

Up front, the team uses three attackers with Moremi, Foster, and Appolis. Moremi and Appolis act as wide wingers who can cut inside to create chances. Foster plays as a lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. This front line is designed to press from the front and force a long ball. During transitions, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition by using the runs of the wingers. The movement of the players is meant to create cutbacks from the byline and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

A major strength of this South Africa lineup is the ability to create wide overloads through the work of Modiba and Mudau. By pushing the wing backs high, the team stretches the opposition and opens lanes for the midfielders. Another advantage is the defensive compactness when the team sits deep. Having five defenders and two midfielders makes it very hard for the opponent to play through the lines or find space in the pockets.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a reliable way to defend in deep blocks and strike with speed. It is best suited for games against ball dominant sides where Bafana Bafana can sit deep and counter at pace.
