Starting Lineup

V. Becker · Ayhan · Kurucay · Katic · Adamu · Tanaka · Ljubicic · Aouchiche · Sylla · El-Faouzi · Karius

Schalke 04 aims to overwhelm opponents with a relentless attacking identity through a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to play a vertical style of football that prioritizes high pressing and rapid transitions. The goal is to commit massive numbers forward to force turnovers and create scoring opportunities in the final third.

Karius starts in goal to oversee the defensive actions from deep. The back line consists of a central pairing where Kurucay and Katic play as the primary defenders. Because there are only two central defenders, Kurucay and Katic must hold a high line and be ready to intercept passes or tackle attackers in one on one situations. They must defend zonally but also stay alert to cover the space left behind the midfield.

The midfield is organized as a four man unit featuring a double pivot and two attacking midfielders. V. Becker and Ayhan act as the double pivot to protect the central defenders and win the second ball. They must sit deep to deny the turn of opposition players and recycle possession when the pressure is on. Tanaka and El-Faouzi play as the two attacking midfielders to connect the midfield to the front four. These players will push up to press aggressively and try to win the ball high up the pitch.

The attack features a heavy front four designed to stretch the defence. Sylla and Ljubicic operate as wide wingers who can either hug the touchline or cut inside to find space. Aouchiche and Adamu play as two center forwards in a partnership to occupy the opposing center backs. These two will look to find the feet of their partner or make runs in behind to break the line. Sylla, Ljubicic, Aouchiche, and Adamu work together to create constant movement and isolate defenders.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the final third. By committing four players to the attack, Schalke 04 can create wide overloads and force the opposition to retreat into a low block. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, with the entire front line and Tanaka and El-Faouzi squeezing the space to force a long ball.

This 2-4-4 formation is a high risk attacking method that seeks to dominate through sheer numbers. It is best suited for situations where the team needs to break down a parked bus or chase a result.
