The midfield functions as a three-man midfield with a carrier and creative engines. Kroos sits in the right central midfield role and uses his elite passing range to control the tempo. Modric works in the middle to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often carrying the ball forward to break the line. Zidane plays on the left of the trio and uses his incredible dribbling style to drive into the half-spaces. This group works to win it back high up the pitch and recycle possession quickly to find the front four.

Real Madrid utilizes four attackers to stretch the defence. Di Stéfano plays as the central striker and works to find the feet of the striker while also dropping deep to link up play. Puskas plays alongside him as a second striker in the hole to arrive late into the box. Gento stays wide on the left to provide width and whip it in from deep. Cristiano operates on the right as an inverted winger who likes to cut inside to attack the far post. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in the attacking third. The presence of four dedicated forwards makes it very hard for a back four to mark every runner. Real Madrid can also use their midfield trio to control games by playing short from the back and then quickly switching play to the wingers.
