United States National Soccer Team Formation
Starting Lineup
MATT FREESE · TIM REAM · CHRIST RICHARDS · JOE SCALLY · ANTONEE ROBINSON · TYLER ADAMS · WESTON McKENNIE · GIOVANNI REYNA · TIMOTHY WEAH · CHRISTIAN PULISIC · FOLARIN BALOGUNUnited States wants to play a direct and vertical game using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to hit the opposition with speed and high intensity in the final third. By pushing many players forward, the team looks to overwhelm the back line and win the ball back quickly through aggressive pressing.
Matt Freese plays between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back four consists of Joe Scally at right back and Antonee Robinson at left back, both tasked with tracking runners and providing width. Christ Richards and Tim Ream form the central pair, where Ream uses his reading of the game to cover space and Richards provides physical presence. The defensive unit stays compact to prevent being caught out by long balls while trying to maintain a relatively high line.
A double pivot provides the engine room for United States. Tyler Adams acts as the primary shield for the defence, using his high pressing intensity to win the ball and disrupt the opposition. Weston McKennie works alongside him to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive line to the attack. This two man midfield must work hard to cover the large spaces left behind when the full backs push high, making sure to drop back and protect the centre backs.
The attacking unit is spread across the pitch to stretch the defence. Christian Pulisic operates as an inverted winger on the left, looking to cut inside and create chances, while Timothy Weah stays wide on the right to provide width. Giovanni Reyna plays as a second striker in the hole, looking to find pockets of space between the lines to play through the defence. Folarin Balogun leads the line as a pressing centre forward, working to pin the last defender and make runs in behind.
This lineup offers significant advantages in transition and attacking output. The team can create wide overloads when Robinson and Scally overlap the wingers, forcing the opposition to defend more area. Having four attackers allows the team to pin the opposition back and creates chances for quick combinations in the final third. This heavy focus on the front four makes the United States very dangerous when they break quickly.
This 4-2-4 formation is designed for a high octane game that relies on verticality and speed. It is best suited for matches where the team can exploit a high defensive line or overwhelm a smaller midfield through sheer numbers.
