Starting Lineup
FERRIER (85) · BOGAERT (85) · WILLIAMSON (87) · ENGEN (86) · LUNDKVIST (84) · EGURROLA (87) · CUTHBERT (88) · BÜHL (91) · HARDER (86) · KELLY (86) · RUSSO (89)Manchester United look to play a very disciplined game using a 4-5-1. This formation is built to sit deep and win the ball back before hitting the opposition on the transition. The lineup focuses on narrow banks of players to deny space in the middle of the pitch.
FERRIER guards the goal. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four. LUNDKVIST acts as the right back while BOGAERT occupies the left back position. In the middle, ENGEN and WILLIAMSON play as the two central defenders. ENGEN works to win the header and cover the space behind while WILLIAMSON stays more central to mark the striker. The back four aims to hold a compact unit and squeeze the space between the lines to prevent through balls.
The midfield is a five man block. EGURROLA and CUTHBERT form a double pivot to shield the defence. EGURROLA works to intercept passes while CUTHBERT sits deep to recycle possession. Ahead of them, KELLY and BÜHL play as two central midfielders who connect the defensive and attacking lines. They look to win the second ball and carry the ball forward when space opens up. HARDER plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find pockets of space and play through the lines.
In the attacking phase, Man Utd rely on a lone striker in RUSSO. RUSSO acts as a pressing striker to force a long ball from the opposition defence. Because the formation is narrow, the team looks to attack in combinations through the middle. HARDER stays close to the striker to provide link up play between the lines. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition by finding RUSSO with quick passes to run into the space.
This formation provides great compactness when defending in a mid block. The presence of the double pivot with EGURROLA and CUTHBERT offers numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. This makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to press in pairs within the midfield bank of five, which can trigger a press and win the ball back high up the pitch.
The 4-5-1 lineup provides a solid defensive base that prioritizes control of the central zones. This formation is best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and rely heavily on central playmakers.
