Millwall seeks to win the ball back high up the pitch through a heavy high press. This Millwall side relies on a 4-3-3 formation to stretch the defence and attack with pace. The goal is to win the second ball quickly and move the play forward to catch the opposition off guard.

The defensive unit begins with 1 in goal to sweep behind the line. The back four consists of 4 at right back, 3 at right centre back, 2 at left centre back, and 5 at left back. 4 and 5 are tasked to push up and overlap the winger to provide width. 3 and 2 act as the central wall, where 3 covers the space behind the right side while 2 stays central to block the runner. They hold a high line to squeeze the space between the lines.

In the center, a three man midfield works to control the middle. 6 acts as a single pivot to shield the defence and collect the ball from the back. 8 and 7 operate as the engines, where 8 drives forward with the ball to break the line and 7 covers the half spaces to link the defensive and attacking units. 6 will drop between the centre backs to receive the ball and help play out from the back. This unit works to win it back high up the pitch to trigger a press.

The attacking front three uses 11 as the central striker to lead the line. 10 and 9 act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create more central presence. 11 will hold up the ball to allow 10 and 9 to make runs in behind. When attacking, 9 and 10 will pull wide to stretch the defence before cutting in to find the feet of the striker. The front line will press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

This formation offers great speed of transition when winning the ball in the middle third. Millwall can create wide overloads by having 4 and 9 combine on the right side. The ability to press in a mid block and then hit in behind on the transition makes this side very hard to play against.

The 4-3-3 is a vertical lineup designed to punish teams that play a high line. It is best suited for games against opponents who struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
