Starting Lineup

Tolga · Andreas Beck · Caner · Tosic · E. Gülüm · Tolgay · Oğuzhan · Necip · Cenk · K. Frei · Olcay

Besiktas aims to play a direct and aggressive brand of football using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition through high numbers in the final third and quick transitions. The goal is to use the wide areas and central presence to punish teams as soon as possession is regained.

Tolga starts between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a flat back four where Andreas Beck acts as the right back to provide width and Caner operates as the left back to overlap the winger. Tosic and E. Gülüm act as the central defensive pairing, with Tosic providing aerial strength and E. Gülüm covering the space behind the full backs. The defensive unit must stay compact to avoid being caught out by long balls while trying to squeeze the space.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide a foundation for the attack. Tolgay and Necip operate in the center to shield the defense and win the second ball. Tolgay works to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive line to the front four, while Necip focuses on pressing aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. This pairing must work hard to cover the gaps left when the full backs push up.

Besiktas utilizes a heavy attacking front line that focuses on constant movement. Olcay plays as the right winger to stretch the defense and K. Frei operates as the left winger to cut inside and threaten the box. In the center, Oğuzhan and Cenk act as a two man forward partnership. Cenk acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line, while Oğuzhan looks to link up play between the lines and arrive late into the box to score.

This formation offers significant advantages in terms of attacking numbers and wide overloads. By using four attackers, Besiktas can pin the last defender and force the opposition into a low block. The presence of K. Frei and Olcay allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations, creating much needed space for the central strikers to operate.

The 4-2-4 lineup is a high risk, high reward formation designed for heavy attacking. It is best suited for games where Besiktas needs to break down a deep defense or catch an opponent on the break.
