Germany National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Havertz · Musiala · Sané · Wirtz · Pavlovic · Goretzka · Raum · Kimmich · Anton · Rüdiger · NeuerGermany seeks to dominate the ball and control the middle of the pitch through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press to win the ball back high up the pitch. The goal is to squeeze the space in the opposition half and use a massive midfield presence to dictate the tempo.
Manuel Neuer acts as a sweeper behind a high line to cover long balls. The defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with Anton and Rüdiger. Rüdiger uses his aerial strength and aggressive tackling to stop direct attacks, while Anton acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Because there are only two central defenders, they must hold a high line to keep the team compact.
A five man midfield provides the core of the Germany lineup. Kimmich acts as a single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Next to him, Raum and Pavlovic occupy the left side to provide cover and win the second ball. Goretzka works as an inverted eight to drive forward with the ball and arrive late into the box, while Musiala plays as an attacking ten behind the striker. Musiala uses his dribbling style to find pockets of space and play through the lines.
The attacking front line uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Havertz operates as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and link up play between the lines. On the flanks, Wirtz and Sané act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create scoring chances. Wirtz and Sané will also look to spread wide to pull the opposition wide before cutting in. This setup creates many runs in behind and allows for quick combinations in the final third.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield to control the game. The presence of five players in the middle allows Germany to press in coordinated waves and quickly win the ball back. Another strength is the ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations when Wirtz or Sané receive the ball in the half spaces.
Germany uses this aggressive formation to suffocate opponents who try to build from the back. It is a high risk, high reward system best suited for games where they need to break down a low block through total control.
