Starting Lineup

Atlético prefers to play a direct and high pressing style of football with a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup aims to squeeze the pitch and win the ball back quickly to strike against the opposition. The team relies on a compact block to deny space in the middle and relies on rapid transitions to catch opponents off guard.

Jan Oblak stands between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four that can shift into a narrow defensive block when under pressure. Savić and Lucas act as the central defenders, where Savić uses his aerial strength to win headers and Lucas provides cover. Giménez plays as the right back, while Filipe Luís occupies the left. The back line works together to hold the line and keep the distance between the defenders and the midfield small.

A central midfield three exists within this 4-4-2 to create a layered effect. Gabi © sits in the single pivot role to shield the defence and break up play. Beside him, Saúl and Thomas work to connect the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward. Carrasco operates in the right central midfield role, looking to find pockets of space and play through the lines. This group works to press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opposition.

The attacking front line consists of a two man partnership. Torres leads the line as the lone striker, looking to use his pace to run in behind the defence. Griezmann plays as a second striker in the hole, dropping deep to receive on the half-turn and link up play between the lines. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition. The forwards press from the front to force the opposition back line into mistakes.

Atlético offers great strength through their ability to press in coordinated waves. The proximity of the four midfielders to the two forwards makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. Another advantage is the compactness when defending, which forces the opposition to play wide and away from the goal. This setup allows them to win the second ball frequently in the middle third.
