United States National Soccer Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Freese · Freeman · Richards · Ream © · Dest · McKennie · Adams · Tillman · A. Robinson · Balogun · PepiUnited States aims to control the tempo through a high press and direct transitions in a 3-5-2. This formation allows the team to dominate the middle of the pitch while maintaining enough numbers to strike quickly when the ball is won.
Freese stays between the posts to organize the defense from the back. The back line sits as a three man unit with Ream (C) acting as the leader on the left. Ream (C) is dominant in the air and can sweep behind a high line if the opposition tries to play long. Richards sits centrally to hold the line and win the second ball. Freeman operates as the right centre back to cover the space behind the midfield. This unit works to squeeze the space and ensure the opposition cannot play through the middle easily.
A three man midfield provides the engine for the United States. Adams sits in front of the defense as a single pivot to shield the back three and intercept passes. Tillman drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. McKennie works as a carrier to drive the play and makes late runs into the box to support the forwards. Dest and A. Robinson act as wing backs to provide width. Dest pushes high up the pitch to overlap the winger while A. Robinson works to stretch the defence on the opposite flank.
The attacking line uses two forwards in a partnership to pressure the opposition back line. Balogun plays as the right striker and looks to run in behind the defenders. Pepi works as the left striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of the striker in tight spaces. The team builds in combinations, using the wide players to pull the defenders apart. When the wing backs get to the byline, they look to deliver early balls for the strikers to attack the near post or attack the far post.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages. The United States can create numerical superiority in midfield when the wing backs push high. The team also benefits from a high press in coordinated waves, led by the intensity of Pepi and Balogun. This allows the squad to win it back high up the pitch and break quickly before the opposition can settle.
This 3-5-2 lineup is built to dominate the central areas and punish teams on the transition. It is best suited for matches against opponents who play with a narrow midfield or rely heavily on wide play.
