FCSB Football Formation
Starting Lineup
coman · dragus · tanase · arad · birli · delos · dawa · popescu · tarno · cisotti · padurariuFCSB relies on a heavy defensive identity to frustrate opponents, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and protect the central areas while waiting for opportunities to strike. The goal is to keep the team compact and force the opposition into wide areas where they can be contained.
Dragus operates as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit functions as a back five that can shift depending on the movement of the ball. Arad and Cisotti act as the central pillars, where Arad provides aerial strength to defend crosses. Birli sits in the middle of the defensive line to cover space and secure the area. Coman plays as a right wing back to provide width and track back when needed, while Tanase works on the left as an attacking wing back. This back five stays close together to deny space between the lines.
The midfield functions as a flat four that sits in front of the defensive line. Popescu and Dawa form a central pairing tasked with winning the second ball and protecting the center of the pitch. Popescu helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession when the team wins it back. Padurariu operates on the left to provide width and help the defense, whereas Delos works on the right side. This group works together to compress the midfield and deny passing lanes to the opponent.
Tarno leads the line as a lone striker, acting as a focal point for the team. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to move up the pitch. The attack relies on the wing backs, Coman and Tanase, to provide width by pushing high up the flank. When FCSB wins the ball, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition. Tarno works to pin the last defender, creating space for Padurariu or Delos to arrive late into the box or make runs from deep.
One major advantage for FCSB is their compactness when defending in a low block. The narrowness of the five defenders and the four midfielders makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads once the team transitions into attack. This setup allows the team to stay solid while still having the capacity to spread wide and exploit spaces on the flanks.
This 5-4-1 formation provides a sturdy defensive base that is difficult to break down. It is best suited for games against dominant teams where FCSB needs to defend deep and hit on the break.
