Standard Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Pardo · Ngoy · Theate · Mechele · De Cuyper · Moreira · Doku · Vanaken · Onana · De Bruyne · ThibsStandard plays with a heavy emphasis on winning the ball high up the pitch and attacking with speed, utilizing a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to stretch the defence through wide areas while maintaining enough presence in the middle to control the tempo. The team looks to move the ball vertically and exploit gaps left by an advancing opposition.
Thibs stands between the posts to command his area. The back line functions as a back three, where Mechele acts as the central figure to win the header and organize the line. Ngoy sits on the right of the trio to cover the space, while Theate plays on the left. This unit can step up to squeeze the space or drop into a low block when the team needs to protect a lead. The defenders focus on staying compact to deny the turn to any incoming attackers.
The midfield works in a four man line designed to control the flanks and the central zone. Onana and De Bruyne form the central pairing, with De Bruyne acting as the player who connects the defensive and attacking lines through his passing range. Onana provides the energy to press in a mid-block and win the second ball. Moreira and De Cuyper operate as the wide midfielders, providing width and tracking back to support the defenders. This group works to recycle possession and find the feet of the attackers.
Up front, Standard uses three attackers to pin the last defender and create chaos. Vanaken operates as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition centre-backs and hold up the ball. On the wings, Doku and Pardo look to isolate a one on one situation. Doku uses his dribbling style to beat his marker and drive at the defence, while Pardo looks to cut inside and create numbers in the box. The forwards work together to trigger a press from the front and create runs in behind.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages, such as the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By using wide midfielders like Moreira and De Cuyper, the team creates wide overloads that force the opposition to shift constantly. The presence of three central defenders also provides a sense of security, allowing the central midfielders to push forward without leaving the back line exposed.
Standard relies on aggressive transitions and high pressure to dictate the game. This 3-4-3 is best suited for matches against teams that try to play out from the back and leave space behind their midfield.
