Arsenal focus on a direct and vertical style of play within a 4-4-2. This formation is built to play through quick transitions and direct service to the front line. The intent is to move the ball rapidly from the defensive third to the attacking third to catch the opponent out of position.

Raya stands between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four that tries to hold a high line. Li. Martinez plays as the left back to cover the flank, and Lewis Skelly takes the right back position. In the heart of the defence, Calafiori and C. Mosquera act as the central pairing. Calafiori is a ball playing defender who can step into midfield to help progress play, whereas C. Mosquera is dominant in the air to defend crosses. The unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and prevent runners from finding gaps.

The midfield relies on a two man central pairing to control the middle of the pitch. Mac Allister and Gravenberch occupy these central roles to connect the defence and the attack. Mac Allister uses his passing range to shield the defence and recycle possession. Gravenberch works as a carrier to drive forward with the ball. On the wings, Lookman and Vinicius provide the necessary width. Lookman stays wide on the right to stretch the defence, while Vinicius uses his dribbling to cut inside and create chances in the half spaces.

Up front, the team utilizes a partnership of two forwards. Depay and Icardi lead the attack as a pair. Icardi acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win the header with his aerial strength, as Depay plays as a second striker who makes runs in behind. They press from the front to force a long ball and win the second ball in the attacking third. The width provided by the wingers allows Depay and Icardi to combine in tight spaces or exploit the channels.

One major tactical advantage for Arsenal is the speed of transition when Mac Allister or Gravenberch win the ball. They can immediately find the forwards to hit in behind on the transition. Another strength is the ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations. When Vinicius cuts inside, he pulls a defender out of position, which creates space for Li. Martinez to overlap the winger and whip it in toward the far post.

This 4-4-2 formation provides a potent balance of central control and wide threat. It is best suited for facing teams that play a high defensive line and struggle to track runners in behind.
