United States National Soccer Team Formation
Starting Lineup
TURNER · SCALLY · TRUSTY · M. ROBINSON · MCKENZIE · BERHALTER · MCKENNIE · REYNA · PEPI · WEAH · AARONSONAggressive pressing and rapid transitions define the United States when they employ a 4-2-4. This formation is built to attack with heavy numbers and pressure the opposition immediately after losing the ball. By pushing players forward, the team looks to dominate the final third and play through the lines with directness.
Turner guards the goal as the first line of defense. The back four features Scally at right back and McKenzie at left back, providing width when the team has the ball. Trusty and M. Robinson form the central pair, tasked with defending the central areas and holding a high line. Scally and McKenzie must be ready to track back if the opposition breaks quickly. Trusty and M. Robinson need to be dominant in the air to clear lines and cover the space behind the wide players.
The midfield operates with a double pivot consisting of McKennie and Berhalter. McKennie uses his pressing intensity to win the ball high up the pitch and drive forward to connect the defense and attack. Berhalter works to shield the defense, sitting deeper to intercept passes and deny the turn to incoming runners. This pair must squeeze the space in the middle to prevent the opposition from progressing through the thirds. They act as the link that allows the front four to stay high.
The attack is led by four players who aim to stretch the defence. Aaronson plays on the left wing and Weah on the right. Weah uses his pace to carry the ball forward and attack the far post. In the central roles, Reyna and Pepi act as the two forwards. Reyna is known for his passing range and ability to play through the lines, often dropping into the hole to link play. Pepi stays central to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Aaronson and Weah often cut inside to create central overloads, forcing the opposition to defend in tight spaces.
One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. Having four players in the attacking line makes it easy to trigger a press and force a long ball from the opposition. Another strength is the speed of transition. When United States wins the ball, the movement of Weah and Aaronson allows the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can recover.
This 4-2-4 formation focuses on aggressive attacking and high energy. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to overwhelm a low block through constant pressure and direct play.
