Starting Lineup

Ghana aim to be a defensively solid unit that relies on quick transitions through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and wait for the right moment to strike. The goal is to remain compact and then break quickly once possession is won. By staying close together, the team can squeeze the space and make it hard for the opposition to move the ball forward.

Asare plays in goal to command the penalty area and organize the back line. The defensive unit consists of a back five where Partey acts as the central defender to clear the lines and win headers. Adjei and Opoku play as the wide centre backs to cover the space behind the wing backs and intercept passes. Mensah and Senaya act as attacking wing backs who push high to provide width. They will overlap the midfielders to stretch the defence and look to whip it in to the striker.

In the middle of the pitch, Yirenkyi and Sibo form a two man midfield. They must work together to protect the defensive line and win the second ball. Yirenkyi and Sibo are responsible for connecting the back five to the attacking unit. Such players need to intercept passes and immediately look to play through the lines or switch play once the ball is recovered. This pair must also track back to help the wing backs when the team is defending.

The attacking unit uses three players to pressure the opposition. Ayew works as the lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Semenyo and Williams play as wide attackers who look to cut inside and create chances in the half spaces. These wingers will press from the front to force the opposition to play long. When Ghana wins the ball, the aim is to hit in behind on the transition and use the movement of the front three to break the lines.

A key strength of this Ghana lineup is the compactness when defending in a low block. Having five players in the back line makes it very difficult for the opponent to play through the middle. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads. When Mensah and Senaya push forward, they create numerical superiority on the flanks which helps to pull the opposition defenders out of position and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This 5-2-3 formation is designed to maintain a strong defensive presence while being lethal on the counter. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and play with a high line.
