Netherlands National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Lang · Depay · Malen · Reijnders · de Jong · Gravenberch · Hato · Dumfries · van de Ven · van Hecke · VerbruggenThe Netherlands lineup focuses on high pressing and verticality through a 5-2-3 formation. This system allows the team to win the ball high up the pitch and move quickly toward the goal. By using a heavy press, the Netherlands aims to force turnovers in the opposition half to create immediate scoring chances.
Verbruggen guards the goal while the defense works in a back five. Dumfries acts as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, while Hato operates as the left wing back to overlap and support the attack. In the center, van de Ven, van Hecke, and Gravenberch form a strong zonal line. The pace of van de Ven allows him to cover space behind the line, while van Hecke and Gravenberch remain central to win the second ball and defend the box. This defensive unit remains compact to deny the turn to opposition attackers.
A midfield of two players occupies the center of the pitch. De Jong acts as a deep lying playmaker who drops between the centre backs to receive and recycle possession. Reijnders works alongside him to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often driving forward with the ball to break the line. Together, De Jong and Reijnders press in a mid block when the team loses possession to prevent quick breaks. They must work hard to cover the space between the midfield and the back five.
The attack uses three players to stretch the defence. Depay leads the line as a striker who can hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Lang plays on the left as an inverted winger who likes to cut inside to create space for Hato to push up. On the right, Malen operates as an inverted winger to pull wide and then cut inside to shoot. This creates constant movement for runs in behind and allows the team to attack in combinations through the half spaces.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The team can create wide overloads through the runs of Dumfries and Malen, which forces the opposition to shift and leaves gaps in the middle. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press. The back five ensures the Netherlands remains defensively solid when the wing backs are caught high up the pitch.
The 5-2-3 formation provides a balance of defensive stability and attacking width. It is ideally suited for games where the team needs to exploit the spaces behind an advanced opposition back line.
