Starting Lineup

FIGUEROA · QUINTANO · MEDEL · BEAUSEJOUR · ROJAS · VIDAL · HORMAZABAL · L. SANCHEZ · ZAMORANO · SALAS · BRAVO

High intensity and attacking intent define the Chile lineup, which employs a 4-2-4 formation. This system is built to play with a high press to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly through transitions.

BRAVO guards the goal while the defensive unit maintains a back four. MEDEL and FIGUEROA occupy the right side, with MEDEL providing cover and FIGUEROA acting as a ball playing defender. On the left, BEAUSEJOUR operates as an attacking wing back to push high and provide width, while QUINTANO stays back to win the header and defend zonally. The whole back line must be ready to step up to set the offside trap and maintain a high line.

A double pivot controls the center of the pitch to link the defense and attack. VIDAL and ROJAS work to protect the back four. VIDAL uses his pressing intensity to win the second ball and carry the ball forward, while ROJAS works to recycle possession and play through the lines. This pair must be prepared to drop deep to defend if the high press is bypassed or if the opposition breaks quickly.

The attacking line features four players designed to stretch the defence. L. SANCHEZ and HORMAZABAL play as wide wingers, with L. SANCHEZ using his dribbling to cut inside and create chances. In the center, SALAS and ZAMORANO operate as a central partnership. ZAMORANO uses his aerial strength to attack the far post, while SALAS looks to play one-twos and run in behind. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and create chances in transition or through quick combinations.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through numerical superiority in the final third. By spreading wide with the wingers and full backs, Chile can create wide overloads and isolate wide players in one on one situations. The ability to press in coordinated waves allows the team to squeeze the space and win the ball back quickly.

This 4-2-4 system is a vertical lineup intended to overwhelm the opposition through heavy offensive pressure. It is most effective when playing against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
