Starting Lineup
ESPONDA (1) · QUIROGA (31) · DUARTE (21) · LOPEZ (5) · CENIZA (33) · MALDONADO (28) · FAGIANO (16) · HANASHIRO (26) · NATTA (8) · CAMPOS (7) · DIZ (22)River aims to be defensively solid and hit opponents on the break using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and then move quickly through the middle once the ball is won. By using a heavy defensive block, River Plate looks to frustrate teams that want to hold the ball and then strike with speed. The team focuses on being difficult to pass through.
ESPONDA stays between the posts to organize the back five. MALDONADO leads the central line as the main man to win the header and clear the lines. LOPEZ and DUARTE act as the wider central defenders to cover the space behind the wing backs and pick up runners. CENIZA and QUIROGA operate as attacking wing backs who must track back to help the defense and protect the flanks when the opponent has the ball. The unit functions as a narrow defensive block that forces the opposition to the wings.
A three-man midfield provides the engine for this formation. NATTA sits in the middle to shield the defense and recycle possession. FAGIANO and HANASHIRO operate as the runners in the central areas. FAGIANO acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, while HANASHIRO works to win the second ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. This group works to squeeze the space in the center and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
The attack relies on a partnership of two forwards. CAMPOS plays as the main man to hold up the ball and find the feet of the striker. DIZ plays as the second striker in the hole to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box. The team builds play from the back and looks to use the width provided by CENIZA and QUIROGA. When the team transitions, the wing backs push high to overlap the winger and whip it in to the strikers.
This formation offers great compactness when defending. By having five defenders and a tight midfield, the team is very hard to break down in the center of the pitch. Another strength is the speed of transition when DIZ and CAMPOS find space. The team can also create wide overloads when the wing backs push forward to join the attack and stretch the defense.
River uses this 5-3-2 to remain hard to beat while staying dangerous on the break. This lineup is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and play with high lines.
