Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
GK · CB-destroyer · CB-build up · CB-destroyer · RMF · DM · CM · LMF · AMF- Playmaker · cf-poacher · cf -deep lineArsenal plays with a high press and vertical intent using a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack the opposition quickly. The goal is to control the tempo by squeezing the space in the middle and using the width of the pitch to stretch the defence.
The defensive unit starts with GK who is tasked to play short from the back and start the build up. In front of him, the back three stays compact. CB-build up sits in the center to receive the ball and progress through the thirds. The two CB-destroyer players sit on either side to win the header and tackle any attackers who try to run in behind. They maintain a high line to squeeze the space and trigger a press when the ball enters their zone.
The midfield is the engine of this Arsenal side. DM sits deep to shield the defence and deny the pivot from finding space. Alongside him, CM works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. The AMF- Playmaker stays high to find the feet of the striker and play through the lines. To provide width, the RMF and LMF push up to act as wide midfielders, often looking to overlap the winger and deliver early crosses into the box.
Up front, the team uses two forwards in a partnership. The cf -deep line drops into midfield to pick up the ball and hold up the ball, which helps to link up play between the lines. This movement creates space for the cf-poacher to find pockets of room and make runs in behind. They work to pin the last defender and look for cutbacks from the byline or quick one-two passes to split the defence.
A core strength of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. The five man midfield can easily compress the midfield to win the second ball. Additionally, the team can use the RMF and LMF to create wide overloads, forcing the opposition to shift and leaving gaps in the center. The coordination between the CB-destroyer players and the DM ensures the team remains hard to break down.
This 3-5-2 is a heavy pressing formation that relies on quick transitions. It is best suited for matches where the team wants to dominate possession and punish opponents who leave space behind their defensive line.
