Germany National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
F.Wirtz · J.Musiala · Sane · Havertz · Kimmich · Tah · Schlotterbeck · Raum · Nmecha · Pavlovic · BaumannGermany relies on a compact defensive block to launch quick attacks using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to play a vertical style that focuses on winning the second ball and exploiting space in transition. By keeping the team close together, Germany aims to deny the turn to opposition midfielders and force long balls that the central defenders can easily deal with.
Baumann stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of five defenders working as a zonal line, where Nmecha and Pavlovic defend the central zones while Tah provides extra cover. Kimmich plays as an attacking wing back on the right, often pushing high to join the attack, while Schlotterbeck acts as the left wing back to stretch the defence. This formation allows the wide defenders to cover the flanks while the three central players hold the line and defend the middle.
A three-man midfield controls the center of the pitch. Havertz operates as a single pivot to shield the defence and pick up runners. Raum and Sane work as the two central midfielders, with Raum looking to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. Sane uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward and progress through the thirds. This midfield group works to compress the midfield and connect the back five to the attacking duo.
The attack utilizes two forwards in a partnership. F.Wirtz and J.Musiala operate as a mobile pair, with F.Wirtz looking to receive on the half-turn and J.Musiala making runs in behind the opposition line. They press the opposition back line from the front to force a long ball. They do not play as a target man but rather as two players who combine in tight spaces. When the team wins the ball, Kimmich and Schlotterbeck overlap the wingers to provide width, which allows F.Wirtz and J.Musiala to find the feet of the forwards or play a one-two in the box.
One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the defensive third, making it very hard to break down. The team can also create wide overloads by having the wing backs push up to join the midfield. Additionally, the lineup allows for a quick transition where the midfielders can immediately find the two forwards to break quickly.
The 5-3-2 formation provides a very solid base for a team that wants to defend deep. It is best suited for matches against high possession teams where Germany can thrive on the counter.
