Tottenham Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Udogie · Porro · van de Ven · van Hecke · Kulusevski · Maddison · Kudus · Simons · Tonali · Bentancur · VicarioTottenham focuses on a heavy high press and aggressive verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the pitch by squeezing the space and winning the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The goal is to play with high intensity, using quick transitions to punish teams that try to build play from the back.
Vicario operates as the lone goalkeeper behind a very high defensive line. The back two consists of van de Ven and van Hecke, who act as ball playing defenders to help play out from the back. van de Ven uses his recovery speed to cover the space behind the defense, while van Hecke provides strength to defend zonally. Because of the high line, these two must be ready to sprint back if the opponent hits in behind.
The midfield is a massive engine designed to control the center and the flanks. Porro and Udogie act as wide midfielders who provide width, often pushing up to overlap others. In the central area, Bentancur and Tonali form a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Bentancur helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Tonali provides energy to press in a mid-block or win the second ball. Maddison plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to play through the lines and create chances.
Tottenham utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. Simons and Kudus operate as wide wingers, with Simons cutting inside and Kudus looking to drive forward with the ball. Kulusevski plays as a lone striker, often dropping into midfield to link up play between the lines or pinning the last defender. This front three works to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play long balls that the central midfielders can intercept.
The main tactical advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads. By having Porro and Udogie push high, they create situations where they can double up on opposition wingers or isolate Kudus in one on one situations. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch, which allows Tottenham to dominate the ball and control the tempo.
This 2-5-3 formation is built for teams that want to suffocate the opponent with a relentless press. It is most effective against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
