Starting Lineup

Robinson · Trusty · Richards · Dest · Pepi · Balogun · Aaronson · Pulisic · Tillman · Adams · Turner

United States plays with a heavy emphasis on attacking intent through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the middle of the pitch and force the opposition into uncomfortable defensive positions. The team aims to dominate the ball and use their numerical superiority in central areas to drive forward.

Turner stays between the posts to organize the defense. Behind the midfield, Trusty and Richards act as a two man back line that must remain disciplined. These central defenders need to be ready to cover wide spaces and sweep behind the high line when the team pushes up. Because there are only two defenders, they must be able to win the second ball and quickly play out from the back to start the next attack.

The midfield operates as a massive engine room with five players to control the game. Dest and Robinson function as a double pivot to shield the two defenders. Dest provides energy to cover wide areas while Robinson helps to recycle possession. In the center, Tillman and Adams act as the primary drivers to carry the ball forward and break the line. Aaronson plays as the attacking ten behind the striker to link the midfield to the front three and find the feet of the striker in tight spaces.

The attacking unit utilizes three players across the front to stretch the defense. Pulisic and Balogun act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create chances. Pulisic uses his dribbling style to beat his man before looking for a pass. Pepi plays as the lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. This front three works to press from the front, forcing turnovers high up the pitch to trigger a quick attack.

This formation offers great numerical superiority in midfield to dictate the tempo of the game. United States can use the wide runners to create overloads in the half spaces. The ability to win it back high up the pitch allows the team to transition into attack with extreme speed.

This aggressive lineup is designed to suffocate opponents who try to play through the center. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and overwhelm the opposition back line.
