Starting Lineup

Van der Sar · Van Dijk · Koeman · Krol · Suubrier · Rijkaard · Neeskens · Gullit · Cruyff · Bergkamp · Van Basten

The Netherlands play a high pressing and possession based game using a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball and control the tempo of the match by pinning the opposition back. The goal is to use constant movement to break the lines and create chances through ball retention and aggressive hunting of the ball.

Van der Sar starts the build up from the back with his shot stopping and excellent distribution. The back four plays a high line to squeeze the space and keep the unit compact. Van Dijk uses his aerial strength and positioning to lead the defence, while Koeman works as a ball playing defender who can hit long passes to switch play. Krol and Suubrier play as attacking full backs to spread the width of the pitch, but they must track back to cover the space behind them. The whole unit works to defend zonally and ensure the opponent cannot play through the middle.

The midfield features a three man midfield with a single pivot to hold the center. Rijkaard acts as the anchor to shield the defence and recycle possession. Neeskens brings high pressing intensity to win the ball high up the pitch, while Gullit uses his power and versatility to carry the ball forward and link the defensive and attacking lines. This trio works to compress the midfield and ensures the team can quickly transition from defence to attack.

In the attacking phase, the team uses three attackers across the front. Van Basten plays as the central striker, using his technique to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Cruyff operates as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to use his vision and dribbling to create threats. Bergkamp plays on the right, looking to drop into the pockets of space and play a one two to move the ball forward. These movements create runs in behind and allow the team to attack in combinations.

The Netherlands gain a major advantage through numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. The pairing of Neeskens and Gullit allows the team to press in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opponent. Furthermore, the ability to switch play quickly using the passing range of Koeman creates opportunities to isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This 4-3-3 formation is designed for total control and heavy pressure. It is most effective when facing opponents that drop into a low block and try to defend their own box.
