Santos Laguna Football Formation
Starting Lineup
F. Pardo · E. Aguirre · J. Sanchez · D. Gonzalez · E. Gutierrez · E. Aguirre · L. Gamboa · M. Cuevas · A. Gutiérrez · F. Sanchez · G. LodicoSantos Laguna plays with an aggressive, high pressing identity using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition and sustain constant pressure in the final third. By pushing so many players forward, the team seeks to win the ball back high up the pitch and force turnovers through sheer numbers.
E. Aguirre stands in goal to manage the defense from the back. The back line consists of only two central defenders, L. Gamboa and D. Gonzalez, who must play a very high line. These two are tasked with covering wide areas and intercepting through balls that break the line. They must be ready to step up and trigger a press while remaining alert to the danger of being caught in transition. The two defenders must communicate constantly to remain compact when the ball is lost.
The midfield works as a five man unit to dominate the center of the pitch. G. Lodico operates in the middle to recycle possession and connect the defense to the rest of the team. A. Gutiérrez and E. Gutierrez provide strength in the central areas to win the second ball and carry the ball forward. E. Aguirre and J. Sanchez push into the half spaces as attacking midfielders to create threats. This group works to compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opposition, making it difficult for them to play short from the back.
Up front, the team uses three attackers to pin the opposition defense. F. Pardo leads the line as the central striker, tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. M. Cuevas and F. Sanchez play as wide attackers who look to cut inside or spread wide to stretch the defence. These three forwards press the opposition back line with high intensity to force a long ball. This movement allows the team to attack in combinations and creates many chances to hit in behind on the transition.
One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the middle. The five players in the midfield can easily bypass the midfield of the opposition and control the tempo. Additionally, the team can press high in coordinated waves, using the attacking trio and the two advanced midfielders to squeeze the space. This high intensity makes it very difficult for opponents to build play out from the back.
This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk strategy focused on total offensive dominance. It is most effective when Santos Laguna faces an opponent that prefers to sit deep in a low block.
